Samsung pulled off a mighty impressive quarter at the end of 2011, with 4 trillion won ($3.6 billion) in net income. That?s a sizable increase over the previous year?s 3.42 trillion won, but not everything in the consumer electronics firm is all peaches and cream. The company saw a woeful decline in its LCD panel business but was able to more than compensate for that with an amazing smartphone library.

Total revenue at the South Korea-based manufacturer climbed to 47.3 trillion won, a 13% increase compared to the previous year. Samsung?s Galaxy brand of phones reached an astounding 300 million units in sales last year. In the fourth quarter, it reported 32 million smartphone sales, making it account for 40% of the entire company?s profit. In comparison, Samsung?s display division saw an operating loss of 220 billion won, a complete 180 from its profitable position the year before.

In other news, Samsung?s semiconductor unit also grew year-to-year, raking in 2.31 trillion won in profit. That represents a 29% increase over the previous fourth quarter. Clearly, though, the story is all about Samsung?s mobile business. The company is now ranked as the world?s largest smartphone seller, ahead of such titans as Apple and Motorola.

Intel and RealNetworks announced on Thursday that Intel will purchase video codec software, 190 patents and 170 patent applications from RealNetworks for a total of $120 million. ?We believe this agreement enhances our ability to continue to offer richer experiences and innovative solutions to end users across a wide spectrum of devices, including through Ultrabook devices, smartphones and digital media,? said Renee James, Intel senior vice president and general manager of the Software and Services Group. The two companies also agreed to work together on future advancements in video codec software. ?RealNetworks does not anticipate that the sale of the approximately 190 patents and 170 patent applications and next generation video codec software will have any material impact on its businesses,? the company said in a statement. RealNetworks?s full press release follows after the break.

Intel to Buy Patents and Next Generation Video Codec Software From RealNetworks

SEATTLE, Jan. 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ ? RealNetworks, Inc. (Nasdaq: RNWK) today announced that it has signed an agreement to sell a significant number of its patents and its next generation video codec software to Intel Corporation for a purchase price of $120 million. Under terms of the sale, RealNetworks retains certain rights to continue to use the patents in current and future products.

?Selling these patents to Intel unlocks some of the substantial and unrealized value of RealNetworks assets,? said Thomas Nielsen, RealNetworks President and CEO. ?It represents an extraordinary opportunity for us to generate additional capital to boost investments in new businesses and markets while still protecting our existing business.

?RealNetworks is pleased Intel has agreed to acquire our next generation video codec software and team,? said Nielsen. ?Intel has a strong reputation as a technology innovator, and we believe they are well positioned to build on the development work and investment we?ve made in this area.?

?As the technology industry evolves towards an experience-centric model, users are demanding more media and graphics capabilities in their computing devices. The acquisition of these foundational media patents, additional patents and video codec software expands Intel?s diverse and extensive portfolio of intellectual property,? said Renee James, Intel senior vice president and general manager of the Software and Services Group. ?We believe this agreement enhances our ability to continue to offer richer experiences and innovative solutions to end users across a wide spectrum of devices, including through Ultrabook devices, smartphones and digital media.?

In addition to the sale of the patents and next-generation video codec software, RealNetworks and Intel signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on future support and development of the next-generation video codec software and related products.

?We look forward to working with Intel to support the development of the next-generation video codec software and to expanding our relationship into new products and markets,? said Nielsen.

RealNetworks does not anticipate that the sale of the approximately 190 patents and 170 patent applications and next generation video codec software will have any material impact on its businesses. RealNetworks businesses include a wide variety of SaaS products and services provided to global carriers, RealPlayer, the Helix streaming media platform, GameHouse online and social games, SuperPass and other media products and services sold both directly to consumers and through partners.

Motorola has just announced their financial results from the fourth quarter of 2011. They reported $3.4 billion of net revenue, up slightly from the same quarter a year ago. That puts them at $13.1 billion on the year, a 14% increase over 2010. ?$225 million and $357 million in the fourth quarter and full year, respectively,? the statement reads.

The sale of 5.3 million smartphones in the fourth contributed to these numbers. It?s a telling number for how well Android is doing for Motorola as Motorola has pretty much been selling smartphones with the operating exclusively.

They sold 18.7 million smartphones on the year. Motorola also let us in on their tablet numbers for the year and they totaled 1 million, pretty impressive considering how relatively new the Android tablet market is. 200,000 of those tablets were sold in the final quarter of 2011.

Motorola specifically pointed out the Motorola RAZR and Motorola Droid RAZR receiving positive consumer response, likely due to the device?s extremely thin build quality, powerful hardware and the iconic RAZR branding.

All in all, they?re doing alright for themselves and they are looking forward to seeing how their future will look with hopeful and/or eventual Google ownership. Head to the source link for their full financial results. [Motorola]

We reported on RIM?s 2012 release schedule earlier this week and now we?re back to paint a more complete picture with RIM?s full 2012 roadmap, which is loaded with information. The deck provides details on everything from the company?s upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook with built-in 3G, to the new Curve lineup including the BlackBerry Curve 9220 and BlackBerry Curve 9320, to new features like Wi-Fi media server sharing and more. From the calendar in the document, it looks like the first BlackBerry 10 smartphone, codenamed London, is currently scheduled for release in late September, but could be pushed to October based on the roadmap, which is a long way off considering we?re looking a a relatively slow three quarters leading up to BlackBerry 10. We?ve dropped 15 slides from this massive deck into a gallery, so check out all of the images below!

Nokia Maps | Top Story | Travelling – out and about

COMMANDMENTS_HERO

I just got back from a 3 week trip to Hong Kong and Beijing (more details about that in a future post). This trip made me appreciate how much Nokia Maps on my N8 and m.maps.nokia.com on my iPad help when I?m away from home.  Hence, I discussed with my colleagues about their travel best practices as well.  Over the last few days, together we built our Top Ten list of Nokia Maps related best practices to make the most out of your Nokia Maps on Symbian^3 devices.

Save time, data and money: Download free maps over Wi-Fi. Make sure that you have downloaded the free maps for your region, and have uploaded the maps of the regions to where you will be traveling.

  1. Download lots of Apps: Now commercial, Nokia Suite with Nokia Maps v3.08 is the best location offering from Nokia so far. With Individual short cuts to Maps, Drive, Public Transport, City Lens, Pulse, Weather and more, you can customize the shortcuts on your home-screen so that the apps you want is just a click away.
  1. Start using the Weather App: The Nokia Weather App is easy to use. The hour by hour update is very helpful, and small details like wind direction, sunrise-sunset time and phase of moon are well integrated to the app  to take it above and beyond the other weather applications
  1. Use Landmarks View : When you are driving or walking, use Landmarks view on your maps to get a better idea of where you are. It helps you to better orient to your surroundings.
  1. Save Data and Money when Traveling: Use Maps in Offline mode when you travel to save on data costs. Change your phone Profile to Offline mode, yet still explore where you are. However, getting a GPS fix when offline may take time depending on where you are, so make sure that you stay put in a relatively open space ? which means not inside buildings or not when using the underground- for a minute or two for the fix to happen.

Part II of the post will be up in a few days. Meanwhile, try out these tips, and give us your tips to have a great Nokia Maps experience!

Earlier this week, an image of Sony?s upcoming ST25i ?Kumquat? smartphone leaked onto the Internet. The Android-powered device is rumored to feature a 3.5-inch qHD display with a 1GHZ dual-core processor and 5-megapixel rear camera. It is also rumored that the handset will debut at next month?s Mobile World Congress in Spain. According to a document found on the website of Indonesia?s telecom authority (similar to our FCC), the ST25i Kumquat is listed as the ?Sony Ericsson Xperia U? ?  although by the time it is officially unveiled, it will likely drop the Ericsson label and be known simply as the Sony Xperia U.

Nokia Maps | Travelling – out and about

A few days back, we asked you ? our dear readers ? what stories do you want the Maps Blog to talk about this year. We got some great suggestion from you all, and some of you shared your experiences with Nokia Maps as well. Here is what Nitin Ule from Mumbai had to say:

?The other day there was a bad accident on the road and I was on the way for client meeting in the morning.. It was not the area i go regularly so i didn?t know how to help the injured guy.. First I informed the Police and the next thing I did is I searched for the nearby hospital on Nokia Maps and explained the road directions and landmarks to the Police with the help of Nokia Maps. Things moved really fast after i gave them perfect directions to take the injured guy to the that nearest hospital. it was not very famous hospital so hardly any one was aware of it but it was nearby and helpful at that moment. Thanks to Nokia Maps for helping me to help someone who was in trouble?..

Modern technology has been accused of alienating people from their surroundings. Nithin?s story is the proof that it is not the technology, but what you do with it that really matters. Thank you Nitin, for sharing this lovely use of Nokia Maps with us.

Do you have stories like Nitin?s to share?

Samsung is considering adding S-Pen digital stylus functionality to future tablets, borrowing the pen-input option from the Galaxy Note for larger models as it boosts data-entry methods. Asked whether Samsung saw the Galaxy Tab line-up expanding beyond mere finger control, ?I think a pen interface continues to make a lot of sense across a number of screen sizes, like the larger is more obvious of those? product marketing manager Ryan Biden told Laptop. ?That?s about as specific as I can be without announcing a product.?

The Galaxy Note comes complete with a digital pen, using Wacom active digitizer technology to support handwriting, sketching and more precise touch control. Unlike capacitive styli, which mimic a point of finger contact and are thus relatively lacking in accuracy, the Samsung S-Pen is far more accurate; we found it was certainly good enough for casual note-taking in our Galaxy Note review.

Tablets offering active stylus support are rare, in the consumer market at least. HTC?s 7-inch Flyer was one example, though relatively inaccurate inking meant its usefulness as a notepad replacement was limited. More common are Windows-based tablets with digital pens, generally to accommodate the OS? many UI elements that are uncomfortably small for finger-control. Apple?s Steve Jobs famously dismissed the input option, claiming that ?if you see a stylus, they blew it.?

Samsung?s plans would seemingly run contrary to that opinion, however, as part of the Korean company?s attempt to create as many variants as possible to satisfy each users? whims. No word on when we might see the first new stylus-toting tablets launch, though with Mobile World Congress fast approaching it could well be there.

In its recent conference call discussing its record-smashing financial results, Apple revealed that its cloud syncing service, iCloud, currently has 85 million users signed up. iCloud debuted alongside the iPhone 4S and iOS 5 as a free-of-charge replacement for Apple’s old MobileMe service, and its growth over the past three months has apparently been explosive; during the same period, iCloud signups exceeded unit sales of Macs, iPods, iPhones, and iPads combined.

Apple has called iCloud part of its “strategy for the next decade,” and as an iCloud user myself I can see why. The cloud syncing service runs much faster and much more seamlessly than MobileMe ever did, and it’s very hard to argue with the price: $0 gets your email, calendars, contacts, and documents synced across all your devices with almost zero effort.

2012 is going to be year of low cost computing. India has pioneered the way of low cost computing and the world communities are looking back at its Aakash tablets which have been the new buzz word in the market. Apple was the first company to launch the services of selling tablets which had customized applications and went on to become an integral part of human life. The tablets from Apple and Samsung prove to be very expensive and they were far from the reach of a common man.

India?s Pioneering Concept: Aakash project was kick started in the year 2011 through which the Government of India will distribute the tablets under a price tag of $35 to the students in various educational institutions. The product would be sold at the open market with a price tag of $50 without any subsidiary from the government. Not many were interested in such devices as they were expected to deliver sub standard services. However, Aakash had silenced their critics around the globe and had garnered a whopping 1.4 million pre-sales orders in just 14 days. The orders were made through the website without making any advance payment. The product is yet to be launched in the market.aakash tablet is the coolest tablet on the market

Datawind ? A Surprised Package: Datawind, UK based vendor is the maker of world?s cheapest tablets. They have already opened a factory in India and have started the production. With the boost in the sales orders, they have decided to quickly open up 2 new factories in India and boost up the production. People close to the company say that they never expected such responses from the Indian market. The company is expected to deliver 70,000-75,000 units per day once the factory starts running with its full potential by April. The company was initially expecting a sales order of just 30,000 units.

Specs of Aakash: Aakash runs on Android OS and comes with pre-loaded Nimbuzz messaging applications. The tablet cannot be compared to Apple?s iPad or Samsung?s Galaxy tablets. However, it could still be a strong contended considering the lower price tag. The government will be distributing the tablets to the students across the country which will encourage the usage of tablets. This could kick start a revolution in India for the sales of tablets. It has a resistive touch screen and a dooming slow processor system.aakash tablets

Better Variant: Datawind is expected to launch its 2nd generation of Aakash tablets with a higher price tag close to $75 with better features. The new version will have a slot to insert the SIM card that will allow the internet connection through 2G services. The new version will have a powerful processor with double the speed (700 Mhz processor) compared to its earlier 366 Mhz processor.

The mood is upbeat in the Indian market. People are not used to the tablet usage and they are waiting to grab their moment. Who knows and it might well pave the way to the higher usage of advanced tablets from Apple and Samsung!

Apple is now the largest semiconductor customer in the world, analysts claim, the company?s appetite for smartphone, tablet and solid-state drive chips consuming 5.7-percent of the total available market.  Apple grew 34.6-percent from 2010 to take the top spot in 2011, analysts Gartner reckon, with Samsung holding second place with 5.5-percent and previous number one, HP, slipping to third. ?Media tablets were also a growth driver for the semiconductor market throughout 2011? Gartner analyst Masatsune Yamaji said of the results, pointing to Apple and Samsung?s respective successes with the iPad and Galaxy Tab.

HP, meanwhile, struggled to find buyers with the TouchPad and canned the whole tablet project, while webOS phones also died out in 2011. The company is still a force to be reckoned with in the PC segment, in terms of sales volume at least, but has seemingly relinquished any real ambitions for the consumer mobility market.

The biggest drop was seen by Nokia, its semiconductor demand diving by over a fifth, though it still remains ahead of Sony, Toshiba, Lenovo and LG. The top ten consumers of semiconductors together accounted for 35-percent of total revenue in the segment, a whopping $105.6bn.

Apple is expected to announce its latest quarterly financial results later today.
